Downed & New Life
Injury System & Downed States
PHRP uses a two-phase injury system that emphasizes realistic recovery and continued storylines rather than using death mechanics to erase RP. Your character doesn't actually die unless you choose permanent death (perma-death) – they're injured and need time to recover.
Our philosophy: Injuries should create ongoing RP opportunities, not end storylines. Just because you're downed doesn't mean the story is over.
The AI doctor exists for convenience and he should only be used when:
No EMS is online
No Players are able to take you the ER for self check, to an illegal doctor or administer adrenaline.
Using the AI doctor should be your last resort as he is the only medical service that requires absolutely zero roleplay. He should not be used as a revive bot just to continue the activity your were doing.
Phase 1: Knocked Down / Injured (On Your Side)
What This Means: You've been injured but are still conscious – dazed, hurt, but aware of what's happening around you.
What You CAN Do: ✅ Speak in-game (groaning, short responses, calling for help) ✅ Use your radio to call for assistance ✅ Communicate with those around you ✅ Be revived by EMS, an illegal doctor, or given adrenaline by any another player to get back on your feet
What You CANNOT Do: ❌ Use your radio if you're cuffed or zip-tied (your hands don't work) ❌ Act completely fine or uninjured ❌ Run around immediately after being picked up
Memory & Recovery:
You remember EVERYTHING that led to you being knocked down
You can identify who hurt you and what happened
You MUST roleplay being injured for at least 15 minutes after being picked up (limping, holding injuries, moving slowly, seeking medical attention)
Phase 2: Severely Injured / Unconscious (On Your Back / Fully Bled Out)
What This Means: You are severely injured and unconscious, requiring emergency medical intervention. You've experienced significant trauma that has caused temporary memory loss.
You are NOT dead (unless you choose perma-death) – you're critically injured and your body and mind are struggling to process what happened.
Immediate State (While On Your Back):
What You CANNOT Do: ❌ Talk in voice chat ❌ Use your radio ❌ Use your phone ❌ Communicate verbally in any way
What You CAN Do: ✅ Communicate with EMS ONLY using /me commands (describing your condition, groaning, responding to questions non-verbally)
Why: You're unconscious and severely injured. Your character cannot speak coherently, use devices, or communicate normally. Act like it.
Revival & Transport:
Who Can Revive You:
EMS (Emergency Medical Services) – they MUST transport you to a hospital
Illegal NPC Doctors (Grandma) – underground medical professionals who can stabilize you
Illegal Player Doctors - If available you may be able to seek out an illegal doctor to save your friend, they may be more expensive as they can set their own price
Standard players cannot revive you from Phase 2. You need actual medical intervention.
If EMS revives you, they are required to transport you to a hospital for treatment. You cannot decline transport when you're on your back – you're too injured to refuse medical care.
If EMS is active and you are not subject to being arrested you should give EMS a chance to arrive and heal you over all other methods. Using illegal methods should only be used if you need to safely revive without arrest or apprehension.
The 1-hour Amnesia Period:
When you're revived from being on your back, you have temporary amnesia for 1-hour after being revived.
What this means:
You don't remember who shot/stabbed/hurt you
You don't remember the specific details of the confrontation
You have fragmented, hazy memories of the events leading up to your injury
It's like waking up confused after a severe concussion
What you DO remember:
Events from earlier in the day (more than 30 minutes before being downed)
Your relationships, friends, enemies, and ongoing situations
General context of why you might have been targeted
Memory Recovery – After 1 Hour: After 1 real-life hour has passed since you were downed, your memory returns and you can fully remember the incident.
The fog clears
You remember who attacked you
You remember what was said and what happened
You can now act on that information
Unlike other servers, you are NOT required to completely forget forever. Your character experienced trauma, but their memory eventually returns.
The 1-Hour Mandatory Recovery Period:
After being revived from Phase 2, you MUST spend at least 1 hour recovering from your injuries.
What this looks like:
✅ Immediate aftermath (first 5 minutes):
EMS may place you on crutches for immediate RP purposes
You're weak, disoriented, in pain
You need help getting around
✅ Recovery period (30 Minutes):
Rest at a hospital, home, or safe location
Roleplay the healing process (changing bandages, taking medication, sleeping)
Move slowly, favor injuries, show signs of trauma
Seek follow-up medical care if appropriate
Process what happened emotionally and mentally
After 1 hour your memory is back and you are fully back to normal.
❌ What you CANNOT do during recovery:
Jump right back into another dangerous scene
Immediately return to criminal activity
Act completely fine as if nothing happened
Engage in physically demanding activities
Put yourself in situations where you could be reinjured immediately
Why this matters: You were just critically injured. Your body needs time to heal. Jumping back into action immediately is unrealistic and breaks immersion.
Retaliation & Revenge:
Just because you remember who hurt you doesn't mean you can instantly retaliate.
❌ NOT Allowed:
Getting your memory back after 1 hour and immediately going after the person who downed you
Seeking revenge the same day you were critically injured
Acting like the injury didn't happen once you remember
✅ Realistic Approach:
Take time to physically AND mentally recover
Plan your response carefully over days
Consider whether your character would even want revenge or if they'd be traumatized
Build tension and create a better story through patience
Think about it: Someone just put you in the hospital. You're hurt, possibly scared, definitely weakened. Why would you immediately go back for round two?
Great RP comes from the slow burn – recovering, planning, building alliances, and striking back when it makes sense for your character.
EMS Neutrality & Information:
EMS has federal protection and must remain neutral.
When you wake up and ask EMS what happened:
✅ EMS CAN tell you:
What medical procedures they performed
The nature of your injuries (gunshot wounds, stab wounds, blunt trauma, etc.)
Where you were found
Your current medical condition
❌ EMS CANNOT tell you:
Who brought you to them
Who shot/stabbed/hurt you (even if they know)
Details about the incident that would compromise their neutrality
Information that would give you an unfair advantage
EMS exists to save lives, not to feed you information for retaliation.
If someone who was involved in the scene wants to tell you what happened, they can – but EMS stays out of it.
Memory Restoration By Others:
People who were present during the incident can help restore your memory once you're conscious and recovering.
✅ Allowed:
Friends/crew members reminding you what happened
Witnesses sharing their perspective
Being shown evidence (photos, videos, items from the scene)
However: This should happen naturally through RP, not immediately as you wake up. Give your recovery period its due time.
Why This System Exists:
1. More Realistic RP Real injuries have lasting consequences. People don't instantly bounce back from being shot or stabbed. This system respects that reality.
2. Continued Storylines Memory loss mechanics on other servers often end story arcs abruptly and unrealistically. Our system allows conflicts to continue and evolve naturally.
3. Prevents "Backing" To End RP Some players use the death/memory-wipe mechanic to escape consequences or end storylines they don't like. By allowing memory recovery, we prevent this abuse.
4. You'd Find Out Anyway Let's be honest – even with full memory wipes, players always find out who attacked them through friends, witnesses, or OOC information. Our system acknowledges this reality and builds it into the rules.
5. Creates Better Stories Injuries, recovery, trauma, and eventual confrontation create richer, more layered narratives than instant respawns with no memory.
Special Circumstances:
Perma-Death (Permanent Character Death): If you choose to permanently kill your character, that's your decision and the memory rules don't apply – your character is gone.
Respawning Without EMS: If you respawn at a hospital without EMS assistance (bleeding out completely), the same rules apply – you're severely injured with temporary amnesia, and you must follow the 1-hour recovery period.
Summary / Quick Reference:
Phase 1 (On Your Side):
Can talk and use radio (unless restrained)
Remember everything immediately
Must act injured for 15 minutes
Can be revived by EMS, illegal doctors, or adrenaline
Phase 2 (On Your Back):
Cannot talk, use radio, or use phone
Can only communicate with EMS via /me
Memory fully returns after 1 hour
MUST recover for at least 1 hour (no jumping back into action)
Can only be revived by EMS (with hospital transport) or illegal doctors
Cannot immediately retaliate even after memory returns
The Bottom Line:
Injuries matter. Recovery takes time. Memories return. Stories continue.
Treat your character's injuries with the gravity they deserve. Being shot isn't a minor inconvenience – it's a traumatic, life-altering event that should shape your character's decisions and story.
Take the time to recover, process, and plan. The best revenge is served cold, and the best stories are built on patience and realism.
