Overview
This section of the Player Guide will give you details about being a cop in Diversion RP. This overview is designed to give you some insight into what we consider to be good police RP. For more info about how to do the actual police job check out Features and Functions
Law Enforcement Roleplay
Being a cop in Diversion RP means you're both a law enforcement officer and a story facilitator. Your job isn't to "win" against criminals, but to create engaging scenarios while maintaining order in the city. Your story is very important to the success of the city and good police are what make a city.
Key Responsibilities
Community Service - Help civilians, respond to calls, and be a visible presence in the city. Much of police work involves routine interactions that build atmosphere. Your presence alone changes the behavior of those around you.
Law Enforcement - Investigate crimes and make arrests, but remember the goal is creating compelling stories, not just catching criminals. We all enjoy a good shootout, but those are a lot more impactful and fun when they are not the normal occurrence for every encounter with criminals.
Story Facilitation - Every traffic stop, welfare check, or investigation can lead to bigger storylines. Approach interactions with curiosity about story possibilities and don't rush through scenes because they seem boring. You never know where they could lead.
Working with Criminals
Criminals are fellow role-players telling stories. Be a worthy opponent and collaborative partner, not someone trying to shut down their narratives. Take time to investigate properly and build cases - this creates ongoing storylines rather than quick arrests. Your goal is roleplay from a lawful perspective. If you find yourself being personally upset by a situation, please refer to Understanding the Boundary Between Player and Character in Roleplay.
Balancing Act
Maintain professional police standards while staying flexible for good roleplay. De-escalate, when possible, use force appropriately, and remember that sometimes letting someone escape leads to better ongoing stories than immediate arrests.
Department Life
Respect chain of command and develop your officer's specialty (patrol, detective, traffic, etc.). Internal department politics and relationships create their own compelling storylines.
Bottom Line
Focus on building relationships, investigating thoroughly, and enhancing other players' stories. The best police roleplay serves the community's storytelling needs while providing authentic law enforcement challenge and tension.
Dirty Cop RP is forbidden in Diversion RP. Being a cop is a privileged position, and it should be treated that way.
